The Activity Production Design for Made In America Festival 2019

www.livedesignonline.com: The Activity once again was involved in the overall production design of the Rocky, Liberty, and Freedom stages. “Our duties primarily include the design of lighting, video, scenic, and staging as well as the scheduling management of guest artist technical teams’ programming times between onsite previsualization time and time on the actual rigs,” explains Patrick Dierson, president of The Activity.

I found it intriguing how the article pointed out the utilitarian aspect that is required for designing concert stages. If there is a line-up of artists, the stage, sound, lighting, and media components need to be able to adapt to the artists' music. These things directly affect the audience but what I loved reading about was how the design impacts backstage. That’s something I did not gave thought to before. The President of Activity, the company who designed the stages of the festival, said they had to take into consideration how the design impacts other components like “backstage storage, rigging’s ability to fly things in and out, strike storage.” Designing for festival stages truly integrates all the departments together just like in theatre. Another thing that struck me was the pictures included in the article, of the media and lighting design. The vibrant colors and animated visuals contribute so much to setting the mood/tone of a performance, and that’s an important general lesson for designing.
