Vancouver film and TV editors want bigger slice of the American pie

Vancouver Courier: Vancouver’s film and television editors know they’re damn good, and they want American producers to know it, too.

On Sept. 25, IATSE 891 — the union representing many film workers, including professional screen editors — will launch Damn Good Editors, a campaign and website dedicated to showcasing the reels and work histories of its editors in order to connect them with the myriad of American productions that shoot in Vancouver.

I am so glad to read that Canadian film editors are taking action to get their work seen in the American film and TV market. As I was applying for schools and envisioning myself living in cities with strong footprints in either theatre or film after college, New York and LA were obviously at the top of my list. But, my cousin (who works in Hollywood) encouraged me to look into Vancouver as well. It’s disheartening to hear that the American producers prefer American work, and discredit or ignore Canadian creatives simply because of their home location. I agree with the article—with new digital communication platforms like Skype, why NOT recruit creative members from off-location? It seems to me that the American producers are fixed on an old, past mindset of internally created work, but in this day and age, why not collaborate with our talented neighbors? I think it is wonderful that the Damn Good Editors campaign is highlighting their talent with demo reels. If an American production is shooting in Vancouver, they should really be taking advantage of the local talent available to them. Plus—getting new talent can teach everyone on the production team new things!

It’s so inspiring and empowering that Canadian film editors are taking a stand in order to get their work recognized! It’s frustrating that American film producers do not take Canadian filmmakers seriously and instead work with only American filmmakers. Unfortunately, when people think of the theater and film industry they immediately think of New York and Los Angeles, but those are not the only cities with thriving theatre and film scenes. Vancouver is an amazing hot spot for the film industry that deserves more recognition. I think it is really great that the Damn Good Editors campaign is trying to get more work and recognition for Canadian film and TV editors. There is also a similar campaign called Just Watch Us that is striving to get more recognition for Vancouver-based directors. I hope that these campaigns will encourage American film producers to look to Vancouver more often for talented film and TV editors and directors.
