Lighting Designer Amanda Frazier Accents Historic Setting for Newsies
Stage Directions: In a recent production of the Alan Menken-Jack Feldman Tony Award winning musical Newsies at Pittsburgh’s State Theatre Center for the Arts, lighting designer Amanda Frazier helped call forth the play’s historic context by accentuating its evocative scenic elements with a vivid lighting design that featured CHAUVET Professional fixtures supplied by Vincent Lighting.

Its always great to see CMU students such as Amanda represented in the local community for their extraordinary work! Amanda's though process going into this production and her design choices were well thought out and extremely well executed. Her utilization of fixtures and color clearly caught the eye of the authors over at Stage Directions. The contributions from Vincent lighting with not only their fixtures but also motors and rigging supplies also played a large role in allowing Amanda to create the precise looks she envisioned. The article also highlights the importance of collaboration among all involved, and how the organizational structure at State Theatre allowed Amanda to put her best work on stage. Again, I think it is great to see how our current students are already establishing themselves in this industry, and exciting to get to work with them within the walls of Purnell.
Wow! It is so encouraging and inspiring to see that Carnegie Mellon students are able to work and make connections in the theater industry in Pittsburgh. Amanda Frazier’s lighting design for Newsies at Pittsburgh’s State Theatre Center for the Arts is very well done. I love that she put a lot of thought into which colors represented which moods, such as lavenders and ambers for dreams, white for hope, and blues and reds for confrontation. Most of the costumes and set pieces were very neutral and muted colors which made the light stand out even more. Amanda Frazier really helped set the tone of old New York City with her design. I would love to see some shows in Pittsburgh soon. There are so many interesting theaters in this city and I hope to check out all of them someday and maybe even work at some of them in the future.
