iHeartRadio: Since magicians began performing for crowds, some tricks have really stood out like Harry Houdini's famous escape from a straight jacket, David Blaine holding his breath underwater for 17 minutes, and David Copperfield making the Statue of Liberty disappear. When the last one happened on live TV in 1983 in front of millions of people watching from home and a couple dozen in person, no one could tell how he made a 310 foot, 225 pound copper statue vanish. Now, however, we finally know.

I knew about David Copperfield’s magic show from my mom. She told me about it when I was small and she was fascinated by it. Of course, no one knew how he did it and I’ve always wondered how he made this giant statue disappear. Now that I know, I’m amazed by it. The large scale magic trick must have been coordinated intensively. It even involves a giant moving platform. Some questions I do have though is how did he come up with this idea? How did he practice this performance? You can’t just casually make the Statue of Liberty disappear a few times before putting on the real show without anyone noticing. What specific mechanisms did they use? On another note, this magic trick made me think of what I learned in media class the other day, about how artists in theatre first used tricks and machines to create optical illusions. Pepper’s ghost is an example, using projection and reflections to mimic ghostly forms on stage.
I love learning how magicians pull off their crazy tricks like this. I think they are so creative in the way they conceptualize and create their tricks to be so believable. One of the most impressive things to me in theater and entertainment is to be able to completely fool your entire audience and make them all think they are seeing or experiencing something that is not really happening. To some extent, I think audiences want to fooled in this way which makes the work somewhat easier, but it still takes a huge amount of pre planning and figuring to pull it off right. With something as big as making the statue of liberty disappear you would have to have teams of people coordinated to make it work. I bet there were more people involved in making this trick than there were actually viewing it from the island. It is just such a huge scale that you would have to bring in dozens of people to make it work.
I have always been very fascinated with magic because as an audience member I never understood what was going on behind the scenes. I had also never heard of this particular trick, in which David Copperfield made the Statue of Liberty disappear. The movement of the stage and the ways in which the lighting suggests that the statue is missing were key in this trick. I think that it is interesting how the observer and the author of this article noted how the radar machine shows a glare due to the fact that the stage is in motion. The illusion that Copperfield created with the use of the radar and the platform as props also made his trick more believable. After watching the video of the trick being preformed and hearing the commentary of the audience members, he really did an excellent job creating this environment in which people truly believed him.
I enjoyed this article. I knew of this illusion, but I didn’t know how it was done. I wonder how this illusion could be used in theater. We don’t tend to move the audience, but we do move scenery around. I’d be interested to see if a show had used this technique and to what end. It could create a spectacular theatrical moment. Though this sounds like a big undertaking, changing the audience's perspective or using an element of misdirection would an unexpected moment. Also, I wonder if the illusion had happened today if people would have realized how the allusion worked or if we would have been similarly stunned. With how amazing CGI is, I wonder if the views at home would be as impresses as they were. Overall, it was interesting to read about how this illusion worked and I would gladly read another article on a different magic trick.
I love MAGIC!! I have always been entranced by magicians, no matter how minor their tricks were. And one of my favorite parts of magic, especially magic on this huge scale, is the reaction of the audience. People love to pick these tricks apart, but they secretly relish in their ignorance of the method. And magic truly relates so much to what we do as theatre arts every single day. We are constantly put into situations where we have to engineer these incredible tricks, but we get so much less credit. We make people disappear, we transform actors from character to character in a matter of moments and we build entire worlds for audiences to dive into. I think we could also learn a lot from magicians, by analyzing how these performers accomplish their tricks, we could improve the magic we create onstage. And vice versa, I think magicians could learn a lot from observing theatre technicians. I think this is just another testament to how connected every single aspect of the arts community has become.
I can not believe that someone would have the audacity to reveal a magician's secrets. This is an absolutely reprehensible thing to do and makes the whole artform look like a joke. This article is an attack amongst the magic community and should be responded to as such and held accountable for the slurring of the great art of magic and fashion of the day this was done. The act of revealing the little fact that the whole audience was placed on a moving platform and the perspective controlled in such a way all based uppon a light moving is shocking, to say the least. I mean it is not like it took millions of dollars and countless hours of crews and skilled technicians who all signed NDA's and would never get credit for all the work that they put into making this trick work. It was merely a true act of magic by a legend.
