Review Roundup: What Did Critics Think of THE KING'S SPEECH at Chicago Shakespeare Theater?
www.broadwayworld.com: In this remarkable true story from Oscar Award-winning writer David Seidler, Great Britain's reluctant monarch finds a surprising ally in an unexpected place. A generation before the royal family we know today, Queen Elizabeth's father George VI would ascend the throne, a most unlikely king thrust into the spotlight after his brother David gives up the crown to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson. Struggling with a chronic stammer, Bertie (as his family knew him) must speak to his nation as it stands on the brink of World War II.

It seems like almost everyone is liking The King’s Speech! I always think it’s odd when I read reviews for a show and there’s just one bad one. I think that’s so interesting! I know that they explain why they didn’t like it, but I just wonder what made them dislike it so strongly that their review is so drastically different. They seemed to not like the choices that were made differently from the movie, which I don’t think I would mind because I don’t really like adaptations. The reviewer also said they thought it was boring, which I could see. I’ve noticed a lot of people get very bored during straight plays. I think I would probably enjoy The King’s Speech, as I typically enjoy the work at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. I also liked the movie a lot! Like I said, I'm usually not into adaptations but this doesn’t seem like such an explicit adaptation. It seems to just be telling the same story. I hope there’s a production of The King’s Speech somewhere near me so I can see it for myself!
