Pittsburgh Current: For Patrick Cannon, who plays Jason in Pittsburgh Public Theater’s production of Lynn Nottage’s Sweat, the production feels like home in more ways than one.
The second-year Point Park MFA student grew up in Sheridan and graduated from West Allegheny High School. Pittsburgh Public was where he made his professional debut after graduating from Columbia College of Chicago.

As someone who does not consider themselves an avid reader, Lynn Nottage has always been able to hold my attention with her writing. The first play I read by her was “Ruined” a heartbreaking and captivating story of women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during a civil war. My relationship with The Public is also a little deeper than the average patron because I was required to do a research project on it for a design class. “Sweat” seems to almost be written for Pittsburgh due to the environment of the play. Steel is a big proponent in the play and, of course, Pittsburgh’s history was built on steel. This is also a very clever move by The Public’s new artistic director who is also the first woman to hold the position. I think we are going to see a lot more plays from female playwrights in future seasons at The Public Theatre.
