The set design is minimal, but effective: a crooked house, a forest full of cut-out trees. From the very beginning, there’s no mistaking this is a fairy tale.

: I have been seeing operas from a very young age with my grandfather, and although I am not the biggest fan of operas in general, when I was younger I always appreciated the operas with familiar characters, bright colors, and easy to follow plot line. Going to these operas made me feel like I belonged in the audience, whereas some other operas made me feel out of place. I think this production of Hansel and Gretel sounds like a perfect opera to take children to who have never seen an opera and who would like to be exposed to this art form. I really do appreciate the fact that the orchestra played “Va, pensioro” in memoriam to the victims of the shooting on their opening night. The author mentions that this was a good touch for anyone who might have felt guilty for going to the show the night after the event, but I do believe that art heals and one of the best ways to reflect on the world we live in is through art, so for some people seeing this show that night might have been the best way they knew to cope with the events.

All this makes it a family friendly affair to watch since everything about the show guarantees it to be audience friendly.
