City Theatre breaks ground on new South Side production center
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: It’s been a long time coming. What for 14 years had seemed like “just a dream” to scenic designer Tony Ferrieri came true on Friday, when City Theatre held a groundbreaking for the Philip Chosky Production Center.
I’m currently production managing New Works over at City Theatre and I cannot express how excited everyone is about this. It had made parking a little hellish for us and the staff of City, but everyone is super stoked for this to finally be built. Their scene shop is so tiny, and what they are able to produce and create is astounding despite having to fit everything through “people sized doors” The staff is also incredibly friendly, warm, and welcoming, so I couldn’t think of a better group of people to have the production space they need to make theater happen. One minor thing that I hope they keep in consideration while building this center is accessibility. The Hamburg is a great space, that I hope you all come to during New Works, but it definitely boarders on the “not exactly accessible” line that many theaters struggle with. Their stage management booth is 100% not accessible, however when we first toured you could only use terrifying straight ladders to get up to it and now they have a much less scary way safer (especially when carrying things like prompt books!) spiral staircase to get up to it. This is an awesome thing for them to get, and I can’t wait to see what they’re able to create with it.
