The 2018 ALTA Awards: A Night of Celebration for Latinx Artists
rescripted.org: “Just look at this turn-out! And we’re only 15 minutes into the night. Like WE’RE always running late!” – Laura Alcalá Baker, casting director and artistic programs manager at Victory Gardens. The crowd attending the ALTA awards that evening at Victory Gardens Theater had packed the lobby barely 20 minutes into the cocktail hour!

These awards are so important to the entertainment industry because they are a call to action for more diversity and more acknowledgement of other people's stories and ideas. The entertainment industry has struggled with diversity and inclusion for so long and although it has gotten better, representation of latinx characters is still not great. There is still a lot of stereotyping and although shows like Jane the Virgin have helped get more latinx actors into the business and helped stop some stereotypes they still persist across the entire industry. I think that it is time to stop with the harmful stereotypes because it makes people of those communities mad and lose faith in the industry. Movies like Black Panther and To All the Boys I've Loved Before are helping to bring more faith back into the younger generations of creative teams and that is good for the entertainment industry but they still need work.
