This article summarizes the plot of a new play that explores Hamlet’s college days. I think, as a comedy, this play will be very enjoyable as it also explores the lives and troubles of three historical figures, as well as other characters from Hamlet. When I first read the title of the article, I was kind of hoping that the play would also explore, in subtle ways, how Hamlet’s early life influenced the way he behaved in the play but, as far as I can tell, this new play seems to be mostly for comedic effect, with characters that do not change much. Thinking about it more, however, I believe it would be very difficult to do a convincing play about young Hamlet and, in fact, might not actually be that interesting. Hamlet is already a dark and moody show with a lot of internal conflict and anger and it honestly sounds pretty refreshing to see a production about Hamlet that is not only angst and revenge.
