Many CAD software’s have built-in tools and applications that allow you to perform many types of analysis. Sadly, I have minimal experience with these tools just because of how new they are and little experience with them. I would be curious to know how abstract you can get with the truss application. I believe that the standard application for arena/touring shows would find a lot of use for this tool, but theatre tends to use truss in far more abstract applications. Just last year I designed a scenic element that used truss to support a ceiling piece that needed to fly in and out on chain motors. I contemplated using the Vectorworks analysis tools, but I feared that it didn’t have enough information to perform an accurate analysis. As the technology and software continue to develop I’m sure users will find more uses for these tools but until then I think people should still run the calculations the old fashioned way and use the devices as a gut check.

I am excited to read about a number of these updates. The truss analysis tool, in particular, is a great example of why I love Vectorworks: it communicates analysis information visually, so you don’t have to analyze the analysis. The user interface is fantastic and intuitive, and they’re always working to put out new industry-specific bells and whistles. However, I was not excited to read that they’re putting more work on the graphics card. Many, if not most, Vectorworks users have Macs, which have integrated graphics cards that are not great and cannot be upgraded. I am fairly confident that the (relatively minor) issues I have running Vectorworks on my machine are due to the overwhelming load on the graphics card. Granted, I have a 6 year old Macbook Pro, but my machine’s specs fall right in the middle of the requirements. If I had a better graphics card, or if there was less of a processing load on it, I might not have any problems at all.
