Theater technology seems to be updating much faster than theaters themselves and the aspirations of production designers fall more in line with the technology than the venue, which makes updating theaters more and more vital. The amount of money needed to do this is insane, but unsurprising given the amount of theatres big and small scattered throughout the world. I agree with this articles urgence to make renovation part of a national plan. Theater and art as a whole provide an important service to community, culture, and daily life. I don’t think that many people realize just how much the arts color their lives. I hope that if such a project is undertaken, the smaller local theaters are not left untouched. Those are the ones that really bring art into the communities. If only the top theaters are updated we run the risk of perpetuating the myth that theater is solely and elite experience.
