New York Theater: “India Pale Ale,” a play by Jaclyn Backhaus running Off-Broadway, suddenly becomes shockingly timely with the killing of 11 Jews in a synagogue in Pittsburgh.
Halfway through the play, a character barges into a bar owned by his ex-girlfriend, distraught: “Like a bunch of people were shot at services….Your dad like…”

The sort of hatred that causes these atrocious crimes isn’t even fathomable for most people so there then comes the question of how to even attempt to be proactive and prevent these sorts of events from occurring. I believe that theatre might be an avenue, plays like this are important but does it’s accessibility come at a time where these kinds of prejudices would be so ingrained into someone that it wouldn’t help, possibly. I think these sorts of plays are important in order to better inform the more general public who actions and behavior aren’t out of a place of violence but more ignorance. Perhaps getting a more diverse and accepting population starts with early education and making different cultures accessible and prioritized in the education of young children. It is a terrible loss to the community of Pittsburgh and the rest of the world that this sort of hatred can still be perpetuated and come to a point of this sort of racism and violence.
