While I don’t know what most the tools Erik, Karl, Scott, and Jeff mentioned, I think that it’s very telling what people keep in their bags. Each person has their “can’t live without” piece of equipment based on their life experiences. One thing I would’ve liked to hear about is the one tool that beginner sound designers should carry with them at all times. Many of these tools seem like an “extra” piece of equipment, whereas someone who is just getting started or isn’t sure if they want to 100% dive into the world of sound doesn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars and just wants the bare minimum to start exploring sound. Still, it’s fun to hear about what other people can’t live without. I’m sure each and every person finds that tool/object that is their go to piece of equipment, and the only way to find it is through experience and time.

I always love reading about what professionals think are the most important tools for their trade and what tools they carry with them to every call. When it came to Eric’s opinion, I very much agree that the most important thing to carry on you is a multi-tool. I think this goes for almost any concentration. That being said, I do not agree with his choice of multi-tool. To put it simply, Leatherman is the superior brand and the Leatherman Wave is the best multitool. Karl and I carry very similar things in our sound call bags. I am a huge advocate for carrying spare adaptors and such. For every single event setup my company runs, we bring with us a case that has been dubbed the “oh sh*t kit.” This kit has spare adaptors, small cables, batteries, a few small tools and a microphone. This is the case we go to when we realize we are missing something or something has broken. I also agree with Jeff about the SPL meter, loud music is great, but we aren’t trying to hurt anyone.
