Review Roundup: COME FROM AWAY Opens In Seattle
www.broadwayworld.com: COME FROM AWAY tells the remarkable true story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.

I am very excited that Come from Away is finally on tour and out for the whole country to see. I am also very excited that the tour is starting in Seattle, where the original show was developed, allowing the audiences who saw the original production the chance to be the first people to see this new production going on tour and see how it changed, and from what I hear there have been plenty of changes made. I think this show, above so many shows, is a show that needs to be toured. This show is so touching and relatable for so many no matter their background and experiences. I truly believe everyone deserves the chance to see this show and having it go on tour provides that opportunity for many. This article mentions that the actors in the show play multiple characters which is something that I hardly ever see on Broadway, which is one of the reasons I love this show so much: because it is such an intimate show with a small cast that truly allows the audience to follow individual characters and their stories.
As someone who has been lucky enough to see Come From Away, I can whole heartily agree that Come From Away is truly remarkable. At first, I was amazed by how they were able to turn a simply set into a plane, a school, a bar, and so much more just by moving around a few chairs. To top off the set’s diversity, the entire cast plays various different roles, each Newfoundlander has another role as a plane passenger. The cast is extremely talented, as it takes a lot to be able to switch between roles so fluidly. I loved how the music fits so well into the theme of the show. It’s kind of folksy while also adding a classic rock element and still also keeps the amazing Broadway belting. I think this show is brilliant and its amazing that it has gotten a national tour.
I am so so excited to see Come From Away when it comes to Pittsburgh next spring. Come From Away remains one of the most beautiful live shows that I have ever seen in my life, and while I will certainly miss seeing the seemingly perfect Broadway cast, I will be excited to see the touring cast's take on the characters and the story. This seems to be a positive review, but I really don't see how any group of professionals would be able to do Come From Away badly. It is such a beautifully written piece of theatre with so much depth already included in the characters and the plot that it is easy to transfer that to another production. In addition, this show must be ridiculously easy to tour from a technical standpoint. The set, from what I recall, is extremely minimalist, in a very Peter and the Starcatcher style. It is mostly just chairs set in different formations to simulate different environments. The most complicated technical aspect is the lighting, though most of those looks are just shuttered to create square and rectangular looks.
Although I haven't seem Come From Away on Broadway I'm very excited to try and see it when it comes to Pittsburgh this year. I feel like when it first opened on Broadway it definitely wasn't getting the attention it deserved. The 2017 Broadway season was very strong with shows like Dear Evan Hansen, Groundhog Day, and Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 getting a lot of attention. However, Come From Away is one of the few new musicals from that season that's still running, and with the launch of this tour it's just going to continue to be a success. It's great to see that so many huge musicals are performing in Pittsburgh this season, as it gives a whole new audience a chance to see a show they may have otherwise never have been able to see. This year's touring season has been very strong with this show, Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, and others all coming through the Benedum Center.
