Producers Talk Passion, Persistence at Variety’s Power of Broadway

Variety: In the age of streaming — and with studios like Disney and Warner Bros. taking over more theater turf — it’s clear that the landscape of American theater is changing. At Variety’s inaugural Power of Broadway event, which took place over breakfast at Bryant Park Grill on Monday, legit biz leaders weighed in on what that means for producers, artists and audiences in 2018 and beyond.

what an interesting article from a perspective that I have never gotten the chance to consider before. It is interesting to hear the many ways in which producers have experienced getting shows to Broadway. Whether it be out of town tryouts, out of country tryouts, or online fandoms. I like what the producers had to say about how you should do what's best for the show because each show needs different processes and timelines before they are ready for Broadway. I enjoyed the little bit of inspiration that the end of the article had. I think it was good that the conference brought up the presence of large companies producing shows on Broadway. While they can be seen as a threat to the authenticity, they bring in large audiences to the world of theater and invite them to stay. The fact that it is getting harder to support shows on their way to Broadway shouldn't be the reason that smaller shows aren't getting there. Jeffery Seller's explanation of how we need people to tell their own stories feels so relevant to today's environment.
