Variety: “Self-fulfilling prophecy” was the refrain heard throughout a panel discussion titled “Breaking Down the Barrier: A Conversation About Women in Country Music,” held at Nashville’s Cambria Hotel on Tuesday to address the shockingly low levels of representation in a genre that once seemed far more female-friendly.

Much to the dismay of other people I really enjoy country music but I also have substantial problems with the industry, content, and treatment of artists in the industry and this article highlights some of my issues with the industry. I love the approach to this panel, it appears to have been a very cool and collective discussion which took factual evidence and compared it to some common myths that are being circulated. I think it’s so important for women to of course be advocates for other women but also having men in the industry become allies for women so it isn’t those who are being victimized who also have to be making steps forward and spend even more energy fighting the patriarchal system. Another subject is normalizing what is currently being seen as unusual this case women on the radio with a different sound then the typical men. I can attest to the fact that a lot of the men on country radio sound the same to me but the women tend to have more distinct voices. Overall there is a long way to go in a lot of industries but I think the women in country music have a very hard battle to fight.
