How Do You Conjure a Feminist Icon Onstage?
Theatre Development Fund – TDF: Breaking new ground for women in theatre is nothing new for Emily Mann. The 66-year-old playwright and director, who has served as the artistic director of New Jersey's McCarter Theatre Center since 1991, was the first female to helm productions at many storied regional venues, including Minneapolis' Guthrie Theater. So it's fitting that she's bringing the legacy of feminist activist Gloria Steinem to the stage in her new play Gloria: A Life, currently running at the Daryl Roth Theatre Off-Broadway.

This is an interesting question that this article poses and it is something that I have been thinking about a lot lately. As we start to see more women on stage and as we expand female stories on stage and screen it is a challenge to capture just what women do for their families and for this country. Feminism and feminist icons are everywhere, so even though in this article we are seeing some more classic discussion of feminism what I care more about is how we capture the power of my grandmother pulling my mom and sister out of school to go to DC and march for Roe v. Wade. How do we take the courage of a single mom working two jobs and put it on screen how do we translate the power of these normal women to the young girls of the world. I don't know the answer but I'm looking forward to working on it and articles like these that pose the question take us a step in the right direction.
