‘Charmed’ Star Melonie Diaz Weighs In On The POC Reboot Debate
NYLON: Ask almost any child of the early aughts what TV show was most important to them, and you'll likely hear Charmed come up at least once or twice. The show, which aired on the WB from 1998 to 2006, told the story of three powerful witch sisters destined to protect innocents from looming evil. And while it was forward-thinking and feminist, it wasn't particularly progressive in terms of racial or cultural diversity. So what would it have looked like if it had paid attention to intersectionality? Enter the CW's Charmed reboot.

I have very torn feelings about this reboot. Diversity casting aside, I don't think this show should be remade at all. It's almost like they're remaking Friends, it's something that is happening too soon and doesn't need a remake. The original show was groundbreaking in it's time for so many ways, mainly that for a very long time it was the longest running television show with a primary cast of women. I do think it's fitting that as our culture has grown that it would be brought back to break ground in a different way, but I do think that it would have more weight, impact, and flexibility if it were marketed without the name attached to it. I've been a huge fan of Charmed since I was young, and I am also a huge advocate of diversity and inclusion, but this reboot even rubbed me the wrong way. The original Charmed is impactful on it's own, and I think that if they really want to make this statement, they should have produced a new show about witches or the supernatural without marketing it as a reboot. Even so, if CW doesn't want to get a reputation for pandering, perhaps they should include diversity in their mostly male led line up, especially in mainstay shows like Supernatural, which features mainly white men as it's cast. They've made a push recently with shows like Jane the Virgin, but there's definitely room to walk the walk and diversify all of their shows, rather than just the ones that were created specifically to be diverse.
Can I just say what a reduction to seek out somebody who really is aware of what theyre speaking about on the internet. You undoubtedly know the best way to convey a problem to mild and make it important. More folks must read this and understand this facet of the story. I cant imagine youre not more well-liked because you positively have the gift. casino slots
