TV Directing Initiatives Raise Profile of Women and Minorities

Variety: The diversification of genders, ages and races behind the camera has been a major battle cry of Hollywood over the past few years. But as networks and studios lament how hard it is to find directors with varying backgrounds to work on their shows, it’s interesting to see which ones are putting their money where their mouths are.

Currently Hollywood needs to address two major topics - racism and sexism. I think this Variety article speaks about both these issues through the lens of diversity. Especially when comparing film to television - television is much more accepting of diversity than film. However, we still need to improve our diversity in both sects of the entertainment industry. I also greatly appreciated how it mentioned diversity of people on camera/stage and off camera/stage. The entertainment industry has been white male dominated for too long and minorities deserve a voice. I think our industry is still stuck in old stereotypes and we are slowly gravitating away from the old ways but I think this process needs to speed up. I actually think that the Harvey Weinstein “scandal” is helping people acknowledge Hollywood’s flaws. Not only that, but award ceremonies like the Emmys are acknowledging the talented minorities that are apart of the entertainment industry. People are moving away from “old hollywood.”
