Prime Stage gets in the trenches for the U.S. premiere of 'All Quiet on the Western Front'

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The ravages of World War I on the other side of the trenches made Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 novel "All Quiet on the Western Front” a sensation everywhere but Germany, where it was banned by the Nazis. The view of war through the eyes of young German soldiers became a 1930 Oscar-winning film, but it was almost 75 years before it was adapted for the theater, premiering in the UK in 2006.

Based on what I know about Prime Stage’s resources, I’m consistently impressed with how much work they are able to produce, specifically new works or premieres. If you look at the different types of theatre companies that are in town, it makes sense that Prime Stage would be producing they plays that are part of their season. In my mind, they are the primary education-based theatre company in Pittsburgh. They have a great market and a lot of potential for educational and school outreach. In relation to this specific production, I’m curious why it took so long for the play to get the United States. The article stated that it first premiered in England in 2006, that’s now over 10 years later. It’s possible it could have been a publishing or a rights issue, but I do wonder if the story is customized or specific to European audiences in some way.
