New Disney Parks Attractions and Entertainment Awarded for Global Excellence
Disney Parks Blog: It’s been an incredible year so far at Disney Parks, with unprecedented growth and exciting offerings at all of our resorts around the world. We’re happy to share that these new experiences were just honored by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA), which represents the global themed entertainment industry.

There is no doubt that Disney parks attractions are creative and high quality. It has everything from fun and thrill to storytelling. But reading the article, I began to wonder whether there can be a true competitor to Disney. In terms of investment a company can make in building the attractions and the revenue the attraction can make, Disney has an almost bottomless pocket. From my understanding, even Universal Studios cannot truly match Disney because it cannot allocate as much budget per attraction. Since the article mentions many of Disney's new attractions, including Pandora-The World of Avatar, and Guardians of the Galaxy-Breakout!, getting awards from Themed Entertainment Association (TEA), I would like to know how many other non-Disney attractions were awarded by TEA. The questions we really need to think about is whether it is healthy and constructive to let Disney roam in the entertainment industry without a true competitor.
Every year, the Thea Awards come out, and everyone wants to feel annoyed that Disney has won 3-5 of them. The truth is, though, these attractions really are incredible and deserve their spots on this list for pure creativity and ingenuity, not just because of the brand name attached to them. As a member of the TEA, I do not feel like there is a misallocation of awards. JinAh brings up the question of whether any other companies are being awarded, and they are. There are about 20 Thea Awards given out every year, all to deserving attractions, lands, and shows. In response to JinAh's other point about budget size, there actually are Thea Award categories for "Limited Budget" projects. My favorite limited budget winner this year was Ghost Town Alive! at Knott's Berry Farm. There are so many experiences that prove you do not need Disney's budget or influence to have an impact in the themed entertainment world. There are simply different genres of experience to choose from.
I am going to be in Disney this winter break and have been told that the only must go to the event is the World of Avatar and judging by the reviews there are a few more people that feel the same way. I think what makes this experience so enjoyable is the fact that all of this technology has never been seen before and is a little too realistic. The development of media technology has completely changed the way theme parks make attractions. They are able to create environments that lead the viewer into believing that the world of the ride is real in the moment. I think back to when I was a kid seeing Disney for the first time, and sure it was amazing, but it was nothing like it is today. At the end of the day, Disney is one big entertainment powerhouse and I look forward to seeing what their future developments are.
As much as we all look at Disney as the big bad guy taking all of the good talent and out doing everyone by the pure size of their wallet they do make truly fantastic and inspiring work. it doesn't hurt them at all that they are able to buy or making anything imaginable with their resources but I feel that some of these projects like the World of Avatar are true works of art and its hard not to recognize such good work. Disney may be the big bad brother that no one can ever quiet catch up too and doesn't want you meddling in their business but at the end of the day the truly produce some truly amazing work. And hey Disney's a big part in the industry in terms of just innovation and inspiring the next generation of designers and creators as it stretches everyones imaginations to the limits of what is possible because honestly that's all that their are constrained to at this point.
