www.cirquefascination.com: After seeing her first Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas five years ago, professional figure skater Madeline Stammen had a chance to hang out with some of the cast members. She told them how impressed she was by the performances and choreography in the water show “O.”
“I remember saying that night, ‘If Cirque du Soleil ever employs ice skaters, I’d love to work for that company.’ We laughed about it,” she said.

I am really interested to see what the Cirque ice show will be like and how it will be similar and different to the other Cirque shows. Each show has its own unique elements that make them special. O is probably the most different since it is in water, but now Crystal will be on ice so that brings in a totally different element to the Cirque world. I wonder how many acrobats there are compared to ice skaters and how many of them had to learn the other art form. They are both very difficult skills to master and I bet they are even harder when you combine them. It brings another element of danger and excitement when they are doing difficult acrobatic tricks on top of ice instead of a solid floor. I would imagine that there are not a lot of scenic elements or crazy lifts because I do not think that would be possible with an ice rink.
Cirque du Soleil has an interesting habit of constantly impressing both myself and the shows that came before them. It' usually at the cutting edge of technology when it comes to creating spectacle, it truly breaks boundaries in terms of bringing the unexpected to mass audiences all around the country. They have been able to achieve great strides in terms of water, and now they are bringing ice to the cirque stages. From what I understand, they are going to be highly heavy in terms of media and projecting on to the ice, which I think is a little basic for the usual Cirque style, nonetheless I'm looking forward to seeing the show before I decide if its up to Cirque standards. The ice world brings such a unique aspect of performance and difficulty that makes the overall show almost impossible to resist, which is why Disney has been successful in putting shows on ice, and I think that a company with an enormous amount of creative integrity and ability to impress such as Cirque will have no problem finding something unique within Crystal.
Cirque do Soleil’s ability to continue growing and experimenting is what really draws me to them as a possible employer in the future. With each new venture, they seem to tap into a new or different kind of performance that faces new challenges and complexities that really opens them to exploring new avenues for their creativity, and opens doors to discovering their limits as a company. On a practical level, implementing ice in a production is a massively complicated venture to ensure the safety of the performers through proper training, upkeep of the ice, and technical challenges. It is so interesting to hear Stammen’s journey to finding a place in Cirque because I feel like it embodies their message as an ever growing company. She reached for a place in their ranks that incorporated something new and unheard of. I am very curious to see how this show turns out, and greatly look forward to seeing it!
