Adam Savage's Maker Tour: NIMBY

Tested: In his own backyard of Oakland, Adam visits the 60,000 square-foot industrial art space NIMBY (Not In My Backyard), where many of the makers set up their fully portable shops in shipping containers.

I’m a huge fan of Adam Savage, though I don’t watch a lot of his videos. To some degree, I feel like this maker space is what our scene shop should be. They have a few things that don’t move – like where their metal shop and wood shop is, but most other things are reconfigurable. Including the size and shape of their wood shop; I guess you can do that with 28,000 square feet. I especially like the idea of using shipping containers. They have enough space for most individual shops or projects and if needed, they can be moved. If a tenant wanted to move their shop – they could just move their shipping container. Granted shipping it and renting another space might be expensive, but they’d already have their shop set. I’d be interested in how they handle some of the other safety aspects such as welding, gases, and flammables. Would each tenant have to have a flammables cabinet for their own products? If I’m welding, how much ventilation do I need and where does it go to and/or come from? Does the venue provide that? All in all, this seems like a great solution to the maker movement. If I ever find myself out in Oakland, I’d like to check it out in person.
