Confusing Phase And Polarity?
ProSoundWeb: On most mixing consoles above a certain price point, there’s a button on each channel with the “∅” symbol. It may be (mistakenly) labeled “phase.” Mythology runs rampant on the meaning and use of that switch, and most of that confusion is steeped in stories from someone who doesn’t understand it telling others who understand it even less.

I really like physics and reading about how it applies to theater tech. I took a class in the science of sound which was about how synthesizers work and the physics behind why it works that way. I find this article entertaining because it was essentially about how the engineers who made this board tried to dumb it down for the operator. But in doing so they completely changed the meaning of what they claimed the button did. I love hearing about things like this because I find it funny when people try to simplify things, get it wrong, and in the end just complicate it for everyone. Hopefully in the future the board designers can fix this label on the board so that the operator can have a better understanding of the actual physics behind what the board is doing. Either that or they should discover a way to actually create time travel and just make billions off of that.
