Trinitonian: “Cirque dazzles with CRYSTAL”
www.cirquefascination.com: Dancing, acrobatics, leaps through the air and more: “Crystal” is the latest production by renowned Canadian entertainment company Cirque du Soleil, and it’s different from any circus performance you’ve seen before. “Crystal” is Cirque du Soleil’s 42nd original show since 1984, and the first of its kind to fuse ice skating and circus acts.

I am so excited about this new cirque show Crystal. I have a lot of connection to it, and its theme. The shows concept to have I skaters and an Ice rink on stage is a direct correlation to my previous job. For almost four years I worked for another large touring company called Feld Entertanmant. This company focuses mainly on arena shows on Ice. It’s most notable shows on ice is Disney on Ice. After working 4 different Ice show i can relate to what it takes to put on a touring Ice show. Also, one of my best friends works on the show as an assistant wardrobe technician. She already worked for Cirque before this opportunity on one of there permit shows. The show looks amazing and I am most excited to see all of the integration of technology and Ice.
The idea that Cirque is doing a show on ice is honestly a little scary. Ice skates and circus acts just sounds like a bad idea. That said, I know that are very good at safety protocols, but I have to imagine, this needs to be very well thought out. The reasoning through for placing this on ice does sound like a really wonderful concept, "The inspiration was actually ice as a component of speed, fluidity and reflexivity, and we wanted to blur skating skills with acrobatics." I'd be interested in seeing this in person, or at the very least hearing about what exactly some of the alternate tracks or safety concerns are. I have seen two cirque shows total-Love and Mystere, and both were very beautifully designed and engaging to watch. I imagine that this new show will be much of the same in that respect and quite a delightful experience.
I am so incredibly excited for Crystal to come to Pittsburgh in January. I actually first heard it on the radio when they were giving out tickets, which was funny because I had just been working for the company a month before and didn't hear a word about it. I think they were keeping it on the down-low for a while, probably because it is a very complicated concept to bring into action. A Cirque show on ice sounds like an absolutely beautiful idea. It is one of the Olympic-type talents that has not yet been explored. I'm sure the Artists are absolutely incredible and come from very impressive backgrounds to be able to pull this off. The one thing I am wary about is that from the article, it sounds like there is a lot of story. Cirque does so many things well, but story is not usually one of them and this one sounds a bit complicated. I do wonder whether they'll be able to communicate all of the plot through ice acrobatics, but I am hoping for the best.
This show sounds like a fascinating piece for Cirque to create. Combining ice skating in acrobatics is just the kind of caliber show that people expect from them, and they mastered the concept in a way that adds the delicate artistry of both crafts. Cirque has a fascinating ability to create shows that impact the viewer on a level much deeper than your typical circus; they find ways to emotionally connect with their audience and evoke emotional responses that empower their audience and leave them in awe. Aside from the brilliant performance value, Cirque’s technical ability seems to know no bounds. In one number alone, media, complex sound cues, set, and costuming all work together to create an environment of self-discovery. This show is about establishing oneself in a community and Cirque seems to flawlessly implement that message in the dynamic relationships between performers, technical aspects, and the audience.
