Dainese testing inflatable protective jacket in the workplace

newatlas.com: The latest airbag-packing safety clothing to come out of the Dainese Group's D-Air Lab is a jacket aimed at protecting workers from impact due to a fall from on high. Currently undergoing testing in power stations, the appropriately-named Safety Jacket is based on D-Air technology already found in motorcycle and ski clothing.

I am a current motorcyclist and so I am actually familiar with Dainese’s Air technology or D -Air. However, I have become even more aware of it as I worked on my Phipps project for Susan Tsu’s class; being that I created a vest for motorcyclists and it incorporates this technology inside that vest. So, to see this same technology not only being used in Ski gear, which I was not aware of, but also becoming more readily available for average workers is pretty cool. It is a good technology and this one sounds even more sophisticated than what is seen in motorcycle jackets right now as they improve it. I really like this idea for workers although at 2 meters I would find that generally unnecessary but A nice precaution. It will definitely be more valuable with all its other gear as an attachment system in addition to the air bag feature that is this product.

This seems like a fairly interesting improvement in safety gear. Having fallen while strapped into a harness and having the pendulum style impact happen to me I can say that I would really have loved to have something that would have helped mitigate that impact. I am curious to know however both how well does this work with harnesses and how does this vest effect ones circulation while it is inflated? While I have those questions I do think that this is a very good idea in as far as fall safety goes and I wonder if there would be other uses for in the production world? Even though I find it to be a very interesting development in the world of safety I can not help but hear a nagging voice in the back of my head that says safety gear can only help if it is actually used and will actually use this gear? Well besides my pessimistic views this is a cool idea.

I am definitely interested in the exact workings of this jacket and how the math and science behind it works. What I don’t quite understand is how having an air pocket directly around your body protects it more than a regular pad would. Not that the article says that specifically, but this high tech jacket could just be a puff coat or padded vest. My understanding of the concept is more closely related to airbags in vehicles and their functionality is surrounded by deploying on impact to counteract the blow. However, this jacket inflates as you fall, negating the deploy on contact principal and just giving you some air-filled pads to land on. I am curious to know how much air and space is taken up by these pads in the inflated position and question if they are the size they are because of mobility and comfort or if they said “safety first” and made them huge.

To some degree, this reminds me of the flight suits that fighter pilots where to protect themselves against the forces that they face during flight. This also seems like a wearable airbag. I guess we should just be glad that these don’t deploy with explosives. The idea behind this is interesting. To use accelerometers and other technology is a great idea, but I’d be interest in knowing how these are rated and what they’re rated for. Would there be different ones for heights of 50’ and 200’? What about working at a relatively low height like 20 feet? Would there be enough time to calculate and deploy the jacket before impact? For really high stuff, might there even be a self-deploying parachute? Assuming that one isn’t tethered. I would also question the idea that because people have more technology and equipment like this if common sense and basic safety precautions go out the window.

What an amazing post, I simply perused it from begin to end. Gained some new useful knowledge after quite a while. Its amazingly great and accommodating for me.Thanks for sharing this extraordinary post.
