Do You Have a Creative Job? That’s (Partially) for You to Decide

www.artsy.net: Thousands of people graduate with arts degrees each year, moving from the creative incubator that is university to myriad jobs in the professional world. Some are lucky enough to find creative positions that mirror their artistic training. But the cultural sphere is not traditionally ripe with available jobs—each year, for example, there are 25,000 new music performance graduates who compete for just 200 to 300 open orchestra posts.

One thing that I believe the education system within the United States completely and utterly fails at is teaching creative thinking. Especially when I began high school, every administrator's mantra was "STEM". While great in theory that we were told to focus on the hard sciences and leave our artistry in our wake, this mindset produces numerous people who cannot solve problems. Problem solving is inherently a creative skill. Regardless of whether one is a doctor, a doorman (or doorwoman), or a draper, they will certainly encounter at least one problem over the course of their career and their lifetime. As such, creativity is a critical component of daily life! Yet, the perception that "a lucky few hundred arts graduates get to truly flex their creative muscles, while the rest are condemned to creativity atrophy in 9-to-5 desk jobs" persists nonetheless. This truly couldn't be further from the truth. The day our country learns the value of creativity, perhaps then we can come to resolve many of the issues that continue plague our country after decades of struggle.
