POSITION: LIGHTING AND VIDEO DIRECTOR

Milwaukee Repertory Theater (LORT B, D, D) produces 12 productions annually between 3 on-site theater spaces, as well as an annual remount of A Christmas Carol, in a rented 4th venue.  We are seeking an experienced Lighting & Video Director who possesses strong skills in communication, collaboration, troubleshooting, and leadership.


Basic Job Description: As the Lighting & Video Director, you will be responsible for all productions in the Quadracci Powerhouse, Stiemke Studio and Stackner Cabaret Theaters, as well as for the annual production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Annual Gala, and any tours or other productions The Rep may produce during the length of your agreement. You will be responsible for evaluating, budgeting, preparing and the realization of the lighting designs, as well as video/projection designs for the productions as well for any productions The Rep may produce or present.
In the areas of Lighting and Video you are responsible for strict adherence to the budgets as established by the Production Manager. You are responsible for supervision of the theaters’ lighting, video, and projection systems, the purchasing and maintenance of equipment for electrics, as well as all fog and haze equipment.  You are responsible for communicating with directors, and with the other departments in production to coordinate scheduling of all work pertaining to the technical elements of the productions that are your area of responsibility. You are responsible for the supervision of the union crews, ALD Intern and the Electrics Intern.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Prepare, budget and coordinate installation and realization of all lighting, video/projection designs in the Quadracci Powerhouse (QPH), Stiemke (STM), and Stackner Theaters (STK).
  • Supervise Resident Master Electrician in QPH, and Resident Crew in the STM and STK.
  • Coordinate and supervise union electrics crews with Resident Master Electrician in the QPH, as well as Resident Crew in the STM and STK to facilitate quick and efficient changeovers from one production to the next.
  • Coordinate all artistic needs from lighting designers to other production departments including scenic, costumes, props, sound and stage management for all theaters.
  • Design and implement special FX needs for productions from fireplace, practicals, etc.
  • Purchase all equipment and production expendables for the theaters.
  • Collaborate with designers on solutions to design challenges within the theaters.
  • Prepare lighting and video needs for rehearsal halls and maintain lighting equipment.
  • Prep lighting equipment, coordinate lighting installation and supervise electrics crew for A CHRISTMAS CAROL load in at the Pabst Theater.
  • Hire, train and supervise the development of the Assistant Lighting Design Intern and Electrics Interns.
  • Maintain all Lighting and Video documentation for all three theatres from inventories, to light plots, to designer guidelines.
  • Maintain all Lighting and Video inventories of expendables including lamps, gel, CD’s, floppy disks, zip line, and various other needs to facilitate the ease of changeover from one production to the next.
  • Maintain archives for all Lighting and Video designs within the theaters.
  • Create Lighting and Video budgets for following season. 
  • Review and evaluate scripts for following season for the Lighting and Video production perspective.
  • Facilitate shipping and receiving of equipment rental/repair for all three theatres.

Required Qualifications and Skills:
·         Minimum BA/BFA in Theatre, MFA preferred or equivalent experience
·         5-7 years experience in lighting
·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills
·         3 years in leadership capacity, with proven leadership ability
·         Thorough knowledge of standard theatrical electrical equipment, standards, and atmospherics
·         Excellent time managements and organizational skills
·         Weekend and evening hours required
·         Knowledge of media manipulation software (including Isadora) and various projectors and projection equipment

Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to lifting, bending, standing, brisk walking.
