5000 Artists Sign Open Letter Condemning Sexual Harassment In Their Industry

jezebel.com: Hundreds of artists have signed a letter condemning Knight Landesman, the publisher of Artforum, who resigned last Wednesday after being accused of sexual harassment by nine different women. A website for the letter opens on Jenny Holzer’s work, “Abuse of Power Comes As No Surprise.”

All of these open letters, thought slightly emotionally tiring to read, are very encouraging. I am impressed by the initiative that is finally happening. In the midst of all these men being accused it can start to feel like everyone is a predator. Seeing lists like this are simaltaneously reassuring and disappointing on that front.
I think one of the largest reasons that sexual violence is such an epidemic in this world is because it is not at all well defined. It is such a roomy topic. I think most females know the line: they have to live through men crossing it consistently. I also think that some men know it.
But not everyone understand the lines of consent. In fact I'd say most people only understand some parts of it. Those being the parts consistently broadcasted by disgusting and predatory by the media. The point of me saying all of this being that I'm sure there are people on this list who are sexual predators and don't know it.
I think the steps moving forward with this epidemic are to define sexual violence better and to teach. While I don't think grown men should have to be taught about this, clearly it needs to be done ASAP.
