The point of theatre is that it has always been a shared, communal space. The reason for it is to sit in a room full of strangers, reacting together, and sharing an experience. Turning that into a private amenity, available only to those staying in multi‑thousand‑dollar hotel suites, shifts the experience into something…different. I don’t know what exactly. Of course, certain entertainment for exclusively the rich is nothing new, and I can’t pretend that theatre is always accessible to everyone, because it’s not; but this concept is further transforming live theatre into a bespoke service for really rich people. It reflects a broader trend where cultural experiences are becoming luxury commodities rather than public art forms. The idea is interesting and perhaps something I would enjoy myself if my life (and wallet) were very different, but it shows how differently people can now access the same cultural experiences, depending on how much money they have.
