I have some very strong opinions on AI. I do not think that AI should be used at all right now. There are plenty of things that AI does well and can be helpful with, I will admit that, but the environmental ramifications of using AI and how much water it uses makes it so AI is something that I cannot justify using at the current moment. I think that if we are going to continue to use AI, yes we will need to teach people how to use it in ways that are helpful for them but not doing the whole job for them, but I also think that AI creators need to think about how to make AI more sustainable. I know that AI in theory can be helpful to some people who need a little more help or to help organize thoughts, but again, even though more and more people are talking about how to use it "responsibly", I personally do not think there is a responsible way to use AI.

We are at a turning point as a society right now with how we will choose to move forward with generative AI. Currently, it is having drastic effects on our resources and economy while not being helpful enough to be worth it. But I think that the real risk of generative AI programs such as ChatGPT is the loss of critical and creative thinking. Oftentimes when people justify using AI, they will say something along the lines of "I just use it for ___", filling something in that in their mind isn't that bad. However, I would argue that if it is challenging enough to come up with ideas or answers for something that you make the choice to use AI, it is a challenging enough issue to warrant either thinking deeper about it or researching. One of the common fill in the blanks that people will use is brainstorming. While it is easy to see the pull of randomly generating ideas while being able to add parameters or change the direction of answers in real time, doing that for yourself or with other people is a real skill. One that we will lose if we start to rely on AI too much. This goes for other answers as well. If we start using AI to do the 'easy' things, we'll forget how to do those things ourselves.
