Pedicabs in UK Banned From Playing Music, Ending Disruption to West End Theatres

www.broadwayworld.com: New regulations on pedicabs are being implemented in the UK, in what is being seen as a win for West End theatres. Transport for London introduced the new regulations last month, which include a ban on music or any loud external audio being played from the vehicles.

I see this as a win for the West End. Those pedicabs can be really obnoxious, and coming out of a theatre to be almost run over by a pedicab blaring music is not the most fun experience. Their music is always so loud, I'm not at all surprised that it's been an issue that affects performances. Being inside a theater in NYC or London is really cool because it's like you're in a totally different world, but then the doors open and you're right back on the bustling streets of the city, loud music and all. It's really unfortunate when loud sounds from vehicles blast through those theater doors during a performance and break the illusion mid-show. I'm honestly a little surprised that they can just make a law like this for the sake of protecting theatre, but it seems like a good step that shouldn't really be negatively affecting anyone. I'm curious if it will be immediately effective or if the drivers will be resistant to changing.

This is such a huge W for the West End. Sound bleed is such a huge problem with theatres in crowded cities, and if it’s something controllable like the pedicab music, then it’s really amazing that they were able to solve the issue. Outside sound can really disrupt a performance. I have a slightly fond memory of ASMing a show in high school when our football team won state champs, and came back to the school mid-musical number, sirens and music blaring. I felt a similar rage level to the people who were probably trying to get the music motion passed on the West End. I wonder if New York City will take a similar initiative on Broadway to prevent further sound bleed. It would overall improve people’s experiences, because no one likes to be harassed by pedicabs right when they come out of the theatre. There has never been a time in my life where I have seen a pedicab and thought “wow, I really want to take a spin in one of those!”
