New home for Yale's dramatic arts
Light & Verity | Yale Alumni Magazine: For almost 60 years, the Yale Repertory Theatre has staged most productions from a converted church at Chapel and York Streets—cozy, but missing the amenities and backstage facilities that a professional theater needs. The Rep may soon have a state-of-the-art new home: The university recently released renderings for a seven-story, 207,000-square-foot Dramatic Arts Building at the corner of Crown and York Streets.

This sounds really nice! I can not imagine CMU’s drama department not all under one roof! I think that Purnell allows us to be one of the top drama programs in the world. Purnell is such a magical place. It truly has everything from classrooms to studios to shops to performance spaces. I can’t believe that Yale, another elite drama program, is spread across buildings. It makes so much sense to have everything under one roof. It saves time, money, and is safer for the students. I think that having everything under one roof also creates a really cool energy within the school. Being with performers and dramaturgs really reminds me of the beauty in the collaboration that we get to participate in. I also think that it's cool how we are able to present our projects to the entire school with various display cases in the lobby and in the hallway by 33, which is something that may not be possible in a more isolated configuration.
This is such great news for the Yale theater program. I feel like Purnell has successfully created a safe and creative space for the school of drama to do a lot of cool things. Even though we still complain about the limited space here in Purnell, a school with its own building is super hard to find on the Carnegie Mellon campus. I’ve walked to different design, arts, and architecture studios and spaces, and they all feel different. But the most important thing is that they are all scattered around different buildings on campus, which is not what the school of drama has. It is always really convenient to travel through different spaces in Purnell and grab what we need for work calls. I feel like Yale feels the same for their new building space, which can allow more communication between theater people and promote more creative productions to happen. The more space artists have to create their work, the more it will definitely affect the quality of their work, and I believe that in a super positive way.
