Sandy Shinner: a godmother of Chicago theater

Chicago Reader: At the beginning of the year, Sandy Shinner, the producing artistic director of Shattered Globe Theatre, announced that she was stepping down from her leadership role this spring after 13 years at the helm. Shattered Globe has hired Arts Progress to conduct a national search for the new artistic director.

I feel so touched reading this article about Sandy Shinner. Although I have never heard about her, and the first half of the article simply names her accomplishments, which seems pretty distant to me, I still feel her as a powerful woman who is capable of leading and encouraging more women artists in the theater industry. At first, not having an abundant knowledge of the shows and theater in Chicago, I couldn’t come up with a picture of what kind of people Shinner is. When the timeline moved onto the theater company nearly broke, and the pandemic, I suddenly understood what was happening, and I was curious about what happened and how she led the people with solutions. I feel so proud reading about her powerful ways of solving problems and supporting women in the industry. The way that she frames how Shattered Globe went through all the challenges more easily is because the leader was to build a community rather than a personal ladder, which is super moving and powerful.
