This seems like great news. Generally, being a part of a union comes with better benefits and sets some sort of cross industry standard; whether that be safety, guidelines, etc. For techies especially, this is important to set up boundaries about work expectations and pay. Specifically the part about work expectations and hard boundaries is important to me. There have been many a time when I have booked a free-lance gig and paid a stipend with hours laid out, but then been asked to stay far beyond my hours for a variety of reasons. The other thing that the article mentioned as a benefit was “guardrails against AI”. AI has been a common thing in the news recently, and takes on an even more negative tone in regards to the entertainment industry. I like that the union recognizes the problem it poses and is working to protect its workers and their craft.
