Five thoughts: Illenium at Sphere Las Vegas

Las Vegas Weekly: On the opening night of Grammy-nominated DJ Illenium’s nine-show residency at Sphere on March 5, the EDM icon relished in his status as genre royalty as he delivered a sprawling 40-track set spearheaded by his recently-released sixth studio album, Odyssey.

As much as I love to dog on the sphere, this sounds kinda cool… But here’s why: this performance was designed to be in a sphere. Schnider even directly states that this performance outdid other work he’s seen at the sphere because it was so specifically intended for this space. Resident artists probably always have better work in the sphere than anyone else just because the space itself is so different from any other theater space it is very difficult to transfer work from a traditional space to a big sphere. This kind of venue can only work if it is properly designed for, and simply put, that’s hard. I can only hope there wasn’t any use of AI in this production, but really I have no idea. I hope not, but it seems that especially given what I’ve read about Wizard of Oz, there is no shame in using AI like crazy in this space. To design on a rounded surface is difficult, yes, but that’s why there’s only one- and maybe one more- because that is so much harder to work in. To put on a good quality production in this venue, artists really have to know ball.

I have heard a lot of things about the sphere and Las Vegas, which sort of drew me to this article. I have never seen an EDM show in general, but knowing the capability and complexity of the sphere, I can only imagine how mind-blowing and headache-inducing EDM at the sphere could be. On top of the incredible visuals of the globe, I guess I need to think about the sound as well. I didn't think about that but after reading this article they talk about these soundscapes and the setlist that was performed at this residency and I just can't imagine the scope of the show because of how massive the sphere actually is in person. I am genuinely intrigued by this, and although I don't think I will ever see an EDM show at the sphere, I would be really interested to see another show or visual experience at the sphere sometime in the future.
