NYU’s graduate film school will begin offering a “Special Topics in Virtual Production” course this spring which seeks to arm students with Runway’s suite of AI tools to better prepare them for the industry. But what is all the hubbub about? AI has been present in film making for decades. Even in 1995 AI was used for replication of crowd extras in Batman Forever. The use of AI tools in the arts is becoming more and more mainstream as the technologies continue to improve, allowing artists to save time and money. Short on time and personnel Evan Hallec, VFX artists for Everything Everywhere All at Once, used Runway AI to edit the rock scene, cutting things out better than the human eye could on its own. So yes, academic spaces will need to update their curriculum to support education and research into these AI tools, so artists are best prepared to enter an industry and use these tools responsibly.
