DC Theater Arts: GALA Hispanic Theatre is proud to present Fuenteovejuna, a timeless masterpiece by Spain’s most celebrated Golden Age playwright, Lope de Vega, in a gripping new version by acclaimed playwright Juan Mayorga. Directed by Helen Hayes award-winning director José Luis Arellano, this powerful production runs from February 6 to March 2, 2025 in Spanish with English surtitles.

Honestly, reading about Fuenteovejuna coming to GALA Theatre has me genuinely excited—and I’m not even a huge theater person. First off, the whole idea of a story that’s over 400 years old still hitting us in the feels today? That’s wild. I mean, the fact that this play dives into people standing up against oppression, led by women no less, just feels so… now. Like, it’s giving timeless, but also “read the room, 2025.” I love that they’re doing it in Spanish with English surtitles. It’s such a cool way to stay true to the roots of the play while still making it accessible for everyone. The cast looks solid, too. I’m curious to see Julia Adun’s debut at GALA, especially since it sounds like Laurencia is such a powerful character. Also, the production details—scenic design, lighting, costumes—it’s clear they’re going all out for this one. I feel like just stepping into the theater is going to be an experience, let alone watching the play. It’s crazy how they’re balancing such heavy themes with a sense of empowerment and unity. I can already imagine leaving the theater feeling all fired up and inspired.
