Players 2025: The 50 People Who Really Perform for Chicago

Newcity Stage: Chicago stages have been described as petri dishes for talent development, with the city seen as a particularly fertile launching pad for the stars of tomorrow, whether in acting, comedy, writing or dance. And they are that, thanks to an ethos that prioritizes bold experiments over safe choices, that understands failure as a necessary step toward success and, especially, champions community over competition.

Coming from the west coast, I hadn’t really had much exposure to Chicago or its performing arts reputation. The most I knew of it was the airport. I was surprised after moving here how legendary Chicago seemed to be. While I have still never been to Chicago, except for the airport which doesn’t really count, it is now on my radar as a place I need to go in my theatre adventure! The first thing I heard about was Chicago improv, which I had heard of before but had no idea it was as prominent as it is. I then learned that many national tours start in Chicago, which I hadn’t known before! This article surprised me by including dance and opera in things that Chicago holds great contributions to. I had no idea! I looked it up and it turns out the Lyric Opera House is close to 100 years old.
