New Database Compiles Over 10,000 Images That are Free to Use

mymodernmet.com: As its name suggests, The Public Domain Review (PDR) spotlights works that have fallen into the public domain, all through the lens of articles that distill the history of art, literature, and ideas. The journal has just launched a new initiative that expands upon this goal, bringing together more than 10,000 images currently in the public domain.

I love the public domain and it's such an underused resource. There are so many things that have expired copyright and are now in the public domain. Books, images, sound effects, etc. There's so much interesting stuff, especially because it is all 70+ years old. I feel like a lot of public resources aren’t used as much as they should be. There’s so many uses for all these images. As the article says “Whether you’re a researcher, an artist, a designer, or simply a lover of old images”. One of my favorite things to use the public domain for is sound effects. There’s a bunch of public sound effects that were recorded on vinyl records and are now in the public domain and they’re a perfect resource for sound design. I used a bunch of them in my high school's production of the 39 Steps because it was the right era, and some of them were very cheesy, but they could totally be used in modern shows and they would work just as well.
