Next Offering From Pittsburgh Opera Will Be First Local Performances of Haydn’s 'Armida'

onstagepittsburgh.com: This Saturday, January 25, at the CAPA Theater, Pittsburgh Opera will present the first local performance of Joseph Haydn’s best known work, Armida. Even the composer considered it his best work. Singing the title role will be Resident Artist Lauryn Davis, in her company debut. Ms. Davis recently was named a District Winner at the Tennessee District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.

This interview with Lauryn Davis was interesting to me. I loved hearing about her approach to the character and the story, especially with it being an opera. I am somewhat aware of actors’ processes and approaches when it comes to musicals and straight plays, but I have never been involved with an opera and so do not know much about opera acting styles. It was cool to hear about the interplay of the style of the music and the role as a whole. She mentioned not being used to playing roles of witches and the singing also being different from what she normally does. I wonder if that changed her process at all and her approach to developing the character. I also wonder if she did a lot of research in order to explore the role. Thinking about the acting process for her has also made me wonder about the similarity and differences between plays, musicals, and opera and if there is a continuum between them

It was interesting to read the interview with Lauryn Davis, especially after seeing the show. I have not seen an opera since before covid but I used to go fairly often as I was usually at the final dress for the atlanta opera. It was interesting to learn that she is from Atlanta, and went to kennesaw state, I wonder if the dates line up and she was ever in a show I saw there. Either way I thought her performance was fantastic, and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Reading her interview about the show and her character was fascinating, when watching I really did feel her connection to the character and her pain when it came to her country or love.
