The wildfires in California have impacted thousands of families and businesses in the LA area. For me, my cousins lost their home in Altadena to the fires, where I have spent many family vacations and time. It was devastating news and made me incredibly concerned for their safety. I was also saddened that so much history and comfort had been lost along with the home. I am super thankful for the volunteers and firefighters who are tirelessly fighting against these horrible fires. Additionally, organizations like Broadway Cares are giving much-needed support to the LA area. I think this generosity highlights what I love about theatre and its community so much: care for others across the nation. Theatre is incredibly community-based and relies on strong support from lots of different people. In times of need as great at this, I am glad that Broadway Cares recognizes this and unanimously donated $500,000 to relief organization in LA. I hope to similarly support people and my family in LA during this time of crisis.
This whole situation is truly tragic. I feel sadness and sympathy for the devastating loss and heartbreak of all those involved, but I also feel anger as the issues of poor leadership and denial of climate change linger in the background. While it is so easy to see the news and the reality of life and despair about it, it is also very important that we look at the good things happening. All these heartwarming stories about community and banding together really show what it means to be a good human. It really just shows the strength and resilience of humankind. It is amazing that so many people and organizations have outpoured their support, even when they are not impacted directly by the fires. Broadway Cares has always been an amazing organization, and I am so glad that they are making a generous donation and contribution to the residents and first responders affected. I love that the community extends so far, from one side of the country to another and across entertainment industries. The support for the LA Wildfires has been wide and bountiful thus far, but we must remember that no amount of money can ever replace what people have lost.
