‘Smash’ musical to open on Broadway in 2024-2025 season
Broadway News: The musical will feature a book co-written by three-time Tony Award nominee Rick Elice and Tony winner Bob Martin. Tony and Grammy winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (of this season’s “Some Like It Hot”) — who earned a Grammy nod and three Emmy nominations for their songs from the “Smash” series — will pen the musical’s score, which will feature numbers from the TV show.

Ok, so yes, I was excited to hear about the Smash musical. I love Smash. When I initially heard that they’re ‘liberally departing’ from the show’, I felt disheartened, but I’m realizing that that actually may be the healthiest and most artistically fruitful way to produce this. I’m so interested to hear what ‘liberal departure’ from the original show looks like. Will it still be Bombshell? Will they still have Megan Hilty in it, who is indisputably perfect? I have a shining hope learning that Spielberg is literally producing it, which is wild to me. We’ve got a good team here with Susan Stroman at the helm. I really hope they pull this one off. Shaiman and Wittman did good work with Some Like It Hot, and it is undeniable that some of the songs from Smash are ICONIC. To be so honest, I found the competition between Megan Hilty and Katherine McPhee so preposterous that Smash is hard to even swallow without getting angry. I think the burning question we’ll all have is the cast. Smash was LITTERED with additional favorites - Christian Borle, Leslie Odom Jr., Debra Messing, Jeremy Jordan, etc. To me, it almost feels like a betrayal of Smash itself to not include that cast, but I definitely have an open mind for whatever this production will be.
