Broadway News: The Broadway League has announced its 11th annual High School Broadway Shadowing Program, connecting 25 students with industry professionals who work behind the scenes. The program, previously known as the High School Broadway Management Diversity Initiative, is in partnership between The Broadway League and the NYC Department of Education’s Office of Arts & Special Projects.

Looking at this program I believe being a part of this mentorship program would have been a 16 year old me’s dream. With so many summer intensives, training programs and internships available for high school level performers it seems logical that these programs would exist for the other half of the entertainment industry. With the training of technicians often being overlooked in primary and secondary school it is very exciting that a program solely exists for the managers and technicians of the future technical world. Overall I wish this program was longer and happened over the summer as I feel that would give more kids the opportunity to attend and shadow professionals. I truly believe that with the spotlight brought onto technicians since the pandemic will create space for similar programs for young technicians to exist in the future. I am hopeful for this new generation of technicians and though they are only a few years younger than me I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for them.

This program seems like such a valuable experience in general both for learning and experiencing the work that goes into Broadway shows. I know that for me one of my most valuable experiences that made me decide to pursue a career in theater was an apprenticeship with a local theatre company - that exposure to what professional theater is like was invaluable to me, and I think it has and will continue to be for other people as well. The fact that this program is not limited to one area is also awesome - seeing all those different careers on Broadway in their variety is so important. I think the hands-on experience that this program provides is really, really cool - seeing different meetings, backstage positions, rehearsals and so much more is just such a comprehensive look into one of the biggest theater businesses. It’s always cool in general to see a backstage opportunity like this - maybe it’s just me but there always seemed to be more classes/opportunities for performers than there were for behind the scenes positions.
