Freedom and Theatre: An International Meditation

HowlRound Theatre Commons: In the fall of 2020, bubbled in the Poconos in northeastern Pennsylvania, nineteen theatremakers from the Wilma Theater, including director, stage manager, actors, designers, a skeleton crew, and myself (serving as the project’s producer/company manager), came together to make a filmed version of Heroes of the Fourth Turning by Will Arbery.

One of the best things about theatre festivals are that there are no rules. There isn't some stupid Freytag Structure they have to abide by to appeal to any kind of wealthy subscriber or figure out how to make their content more appealing to a wide audience. Theatre's catharsis can be screaming profanity for an hour or it can be making puppets out of fat suit body parts. It's sharing something special in a moment with an audience and a performer and no other art form can really do what theatre does. That's what makes it special. Like a different vibe or a different energy to get the immediate feedback from the audience is the catharsis for the performers and we're just in a feedback loop of feeding off of each other's energy and it's the best part. To share a special moment with people around you, for better or worse.
