I’ve seen a lot of hate for Emily’s outfits and while the styling can be excessive at times, I think there are many moments where it works and reflects Emily’s upbeat personality. One of my favorites on this list is the black dress with a giant pink bow and green patterned robe. Paired with a simple and sleek ponytail & a classic matte red lip, the drama of the bow can be the main focus of the outfit, and the easy robe adds a nice color contrast and makes the outfit feel more unique. I also love the striped short-sleeve polo paired with the teal and blue patterned skirt. The green belt really ties the look together and it’s a great example of good pattern mixing. The only thing I would change about the look is Emily’s hairstyling; the outfit feels very young and energetic and the long waves pull all that down and feels mismatched.
I’ve never seen Emily in Paris, but I found this article incredibly interesting. I disagree with this articles rankings at almost every turn. First of all, I believe outfit #5 is far too low on the list. It’s cute, it’s pink, and it has so many buttons. What more could you want? I also think the outfit with the black dress and pin bow is criminally underrated. It’s childlike and mature at the same time, and Lily Collins pulls it off completely. I also think that the suits being given an honorable mention and not put on the list is a terrible mistake. Just from the 3 suits pictured here, I’m already seeing innovation, pattern, and color that make me excited to see more suits. The dismissal of men’s fashion in this article seems like a jab at the designer who clearly put time and thought into exciting suits. Finally, despite having never seen the show, I like that the outfits in this article show themes with each character. Emily wears reds, pinks, ruffles, bows, and hearts, while Mindy has darker, tighter, and more sophisticated looks.
As someone in the theatre industry, I can’t watch television without paying attention to technical and design aspects. When watching fashionable shows like Emily in Paris, it is easy to glance over how specific these costumes get, however, that does not happen in my case. I sometimes even forget how important accessories are to a costume designer’s envision. For example, this article mentions the necklace the actor that plays Emily is wearing with a red dress in the second blurb and how it perfectly complements the outfit. Shoes, jewelry, makeup, even sunglass style, are key elements to making such in-depth characters come to life. I also appreciate how each outfit makes sense to each of the characters. As mentioned, the “wardrobe” for the character Sylvie in this series matches her persona and allows for the contrast in personalities between her and Emily to be displayed between the contrast in colors they wear in the show.
