James Snyder: Harry Potter star fired from Cursed Child on Broadway after misconduct allegations

The Independent: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child actor James Snyder has been fired from the Broadway production following a misconduct complaint by a co-star. Snyder played Harry Potter in the Tony-winning spin-off, which picks up 19 years after JK Rowling’s last novel.

The handling of the allegations against James Snyder seems to be vastly different from how they would’ve been handled twenty years ago, and while the situation itself is terrible, it does demonstrate progress. While a play’s lead might’ve been insulated from their bad behavior in the past, where their importance to the production might “justify” sweeping misconduct under the table, James Snyder’s dismissal, after being suspended while an investigation could take place, shows that this is no longer acceptable. I would theorize that a component of this also has to do with the audience, and how willing people are to look past someone’s personal behavior. Now, audiences are much more willing to hold people accountable and are not as okay with misconduct. Hopefully, this willingness to put what’s right first and to create a healthy, positive work environment, rather than bending the world around the stars, continues in the future.
