REVIEW: Pittsburgh Opera’s “The Rose Elf”
onStage Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh Opera finished the four-performance run of David Hertzberg‘s The Rose Elf with this afternoon’s matinee. Although the seating capacity of the George R. White Studio, in the renamed Bitz Opera Factory in the Strip, is limited to a couple of hundred people, all performances were sold out.

This review mostly makes me think of how subjective the job of critic is. Quite literally Parous’s only critique of “The Rose Elf” is that some of the performers don’t get enough stage time. Otherwise, he admits that the opera is technically fantastic, even saying “Everything that possibly could be done for the opera was done and done well.” The audience loved it, and the talent was evident. Despite this, the review has a decidedly negative tone. Parous shows clear disdain at having to attend the opera on a night of a second string orchestra, and goes into the performance expecting to like nothing about it. To that, I have to wonder why he didn’t go on a different night. Or see a different show. Based on this review alone, it seems as though the Pittsburgh Opera has a lot to be proud of from “The Rose Elf.” This review just goes to show that you can’t please them all.
