Vast Optocore network for The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, San Diego’s new outdoor waterfront venue
LightSoundJournal.com: Optocore North America has provided an extensive fiber optic audio network for The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, the San Diego Symphony’s new, state-of-the-art venue. Situated in San Diego Bay, the 10,000-cap outdoor amphitheater becomes the first permanent year-round waterfront concert and events space in the US to be operated by a symphony orchestra.

Just another way that sound engineering is moving farther into the digital realm, we’re now using fiber optic networks(yes, multiple networks) to connect sound systems with little to no latency across giant performance venues. Two networks were installed parallel to each other; one of them for the sound console and stage inputs, and the other for communication through headsets and recording purposes. Each system has an Optocore AutoRouter which automatically reconfigures the network whenever a new device is plugged in. This system is massive, fitting for a 10,000 person capacity outdoor venue, and the system is such a powerhouse that it can transmit sound data across the entire venue almost instantaneously. Digital connectivity and processing has revolutionized sound over the past decade, and as a sound designer it amazes me to see how these systems continue to grow and evolve, incorporating ground-breaking technology and turning sound design into more of sound ‘networking’.
